Happy Birthday, Workspaces šŸŽˆ

5 years of consistency

Starting a newsletter is easy. Consistently publishing one is hard.

Need some proof? I originally said I was going to publish this newsletter every single Sunday. Well… the last one went out on March 18… three weeks ago. And not on a Sunday.

Consistency for anything is hard.

That’s why celebrating my newsletter Workspaces’ 5th ā€œbirthdayā€ yesterday was such a big deal.

I have hit publish every single Saturday since April 5, 2020.

That’s 261 straight weekends of pushing out content.

Throw away all the vanity metrics… that consistency is what was worth celebrating.

And a huge shoutout to my wife for surprising me with this cake! Tasted great, looked even better.

But because I do also enjoy vanity metrics from time to time… here are a few that make me smile.

  • 14,500+ subscribers

  • 2,500,000+ pageviews

  • 475+ featured guests

  • 60,000+ social followers

  • Read by someone at your favorite tech company

  • Multiple jobs/job offers because of it

Thank you!

When I started this project I had zero audience or connections. To see it still going (and growing) five years in is absolutely crazy to me.

I owe a ton to a lot of people for helping me get to this point. Here are a few that stand out.

  • Laura. My wife who somehow still listens to me talk about desk pics every single day.

  • Shiv Bagavathy. The very first guest on Workspaces. If he didn’t answer my text this project may not have ever happened.

  • Sam DeBrule. The first person to ever give me a job in tech. Workspaces true first believer and hype man.

  • Haley Bryant. An early fan and believer of Workspaces and what I was doing who helped me transition out of supply chain and into the world of tech.

  • Joey Banks. Shared Workspaces countless times when publishing it felt like shouting into the void. Led to the single biggest day of growth and made me realize that this could actually grow into something.

  • David Hoang. Helped get Workspaces featured in the Webflow quarterly newsletter early on.

  • Chris Frantz. Bought Workspaces from me in 2022 and led to me truly working in tech. Sold Workspaces back to me for $1.

  • Priyank Shah. The designer and developer who helped take Workspaces from a bland Substack into the website that you know and love today.

  • All 478 featured guests (as of 4/6/25). You have allowed me to share your story and have made this entire thing possible.

  • All 14,000+ subscribers. Thanks for reading and clicking. Let’s keep it going for the next 5 years.

Making money with my newsletters is great. Managing the entire process isn’t.

Next week I’ll share my current process for finding sponsors and managing the entire lifecycle from first conversation to money hitting my bank account.

Stick around.
